The role of the therapist is to act as a guide, using professional objectivity, knowledge of human psychology and work experience to help clients find answers to problems or paths to more satisfactory lives through their own strengths and getting new ideas and perspectives. The benefit of therapy is achieving these goals. The risk of therapy is dealing with painful experiences of the past and present. That is why therapy differs from the advice of family and friends.
